More about Cloud Underground Radio

Technical specs

Cloud Underground Radio stream is running from a Linux virtual machine (VM) that was allocated 6 CPU cores and 10GB of RAM. After testing several hypervisors, we ended up using KVM with QEMU emulation. We are using OBS Studio for streaming and are capturing music from the DeaDBeeF music player.

The computer that is hosting the VM pushing the stream is running an AMD Ryzen 7 3800x with 32GB of DDR4 3600 SDRAM made by OLOy. The motherboard is a MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk with a 1TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD in the main m.2 slot and an older Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 for the GPU. All of that is powered by an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G5, a high-quality 650W modular power supply, and is housed in a Cooler Master MasterBox MB511 ATX mid-tower computer case.

About the music

Tracking down community commons and copyright free music is probably the hardest part of curating this radio station. OCRemix is a great resource if you want any music that is video game inspired. Otherwise, we have had good luck by searching the copyright free or community commons tags in bandcamp.com. Another great resource for creative commons music is freemusicarchive.org.
